Chandler's Ford Infant School

Maths Leader: Mrs York

At Chandler’s Ford Infant School we believe mathematics helps children to make sense of the world around them. It teaches them to organise, reason, problem-solve and think in abstract ways. Mathematics in school prepares children to be effective and responsible citizens because it is fundamental to everyday life. At Chandler's Ford Infant School we endeavour to ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic 'can-do' attitude towards mathematics. We plan and teach mathematics in a stimulating, contextual and engaging way,  using the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach.  Our children are confident mathematicians who understand that mistakes help them to learn and develop. Growth mind-set is at the heart of our mathematical teaching and children learn to challenge themselves.

A Chandler’s Ford mathematician is:

  • Positive about maths and sees being numerate as a vital skill for life, as they build a personal toolkit of core numeracy skills to use with increasing independence
  • A confident, resilient problem solver who sees themselves as an able and competent mathematician
  • Able to explore mathematical concepts by independently accessing high quality resources, representing their mathematical thinking using taught models and their own jottings

Our Whole School Approach to Problem Solving

Maths Progression Document

Chandlers Ford Infant School and Merdon Junior School Maths Leaders have worked together to complete a Maths Progression Document across both schools. The document reflects our Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract teaching style. We hope you can use this to support your own children at home in developing their Maths skills and strategies
