Chandler's Ford Infant School

Phonics - Supersonic Phonic Friends

At Chandler's Ford Infant School we are proud to have invested in ‘Supersonic Phonic Friends’ (SSPF). The Phonics Scheme is designed for Year R, Year 1, Year 2 and for some children in KS2 who would benefit from extra support. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills as well as prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It is a fully systematic, synthetic programme for teaching phonic skills.

Sessions are taught daily for 30 minutes and have a clear structure following the model: Revisit & Revise, Teach, Practise and Apply. We also run daily 'scoop groups' to ensure all children have the chance to recap and consolidate prior learning as well as additional intervention groups for those that are working on a different phase of sounds. Each afternoon we have 'Read with Rex' time which is a further opportunity to recap the morning learning. This varies between year groups but usually involves 'Nonsense Nan' and 'the real deal' words and using the motto 'read with speed' to encourage the children to read sentences for fluency.

There are also focused activities within the scheme that support children's understanding of 'nonsense' words in preparation for the Year 1 Phonics Screening. This is all done through a character called Nonsense Nan!

Supersonic Phonic Friends is a fun and interactive scheme that aims to  'wrap our children' in rhyme' to ensure they 'hear the sounds in the words they speak'.
