Religious Education Leader: Mrs Brokenshire

Religious Education in our school follows Living Difference IV which is the Hampshire Agreed Syllabus for schools.

 

Religious Education is taught through enquiry-based learning. Children explore religious concepts through what is called a 'Cycle of Enquiry'. There are four key concepts that are explored and revisited to deepen children's understanding of the concepts over their time at school. These are the concepts of Special, Community, Belonging and Love. We use these, along with a few other concepts to support children's learning around Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism. 

 

Our intention is to develop respectful and responsible individuals who are confident to express their own opinions and ideas as well as being able to show curiosity and acceptance of the beliefs of others.  We teach the children to explore, challenge, respect, and celebrate with their learning.  They learn that everyone belongs and is accepted no matter what their beliefs and, as such, aim to prepare them for their future, ever-changing life in modern Britain. 

 

Religious Education is taught in a discrete block, once every half term.  We encourage visitors who may have expertise in a particular religion to come in and talk to the children. Please do get in touch. 

 

Parents have a right to withdraw their children from collective worship. If a parent asks for their child to be wholly or partly excused from attending collective worship at the school, the school must comply unless the request is withdrawn. Any parent who wishes to exercise this right should consult the Headteacher. Teachers may also withdraw from collective worship.

Easter Learning

 

At Easter we enjoy learning about how Christians remember and celebrate during Holy Week! Here is just some of what we get up to...

 

In Year 2 the children learn about Palm Sunday and have a go at trying to imagine what the atmosphere would have been like when Jesus was welcomed. The children learn about the symbols and signs that help Christians to remember what happened to Jesus at Easter, such as palm crosses. 

 

In Year 1 the children learn about Good Friday and Easter Sunday, reading passages from the Bible and thinking about how the mood changed in the story from sadness to happiness. The children also enjoy making easter gardens within our school grounds.

 

In the EYFS the children begin by thinking about what a celebration is and why people celebrate, they make a class book of celebrations to help them reflect on this. The children learn about the Easter story and together have a go at making Easter gardens that they use to retell the Easter story. The children also make crosses to help them remember that Jesus was put upon a cross. 

 

Working together as a school we busily prepare Easter baskets to share with people in the community. We make crafts that will help people to remember the Christian story of Easter. Our baskets include chocolate eggs, salt dough decorations painted with signs of Spring, crosses made with sticks and twine, Easter drawings, a piece of weaving made with paper and freshly cut flowers in decorated jars! 

 

We finish off a fantastic week of learning with hot cross buns at snack time and an Egg-citing Bonnet parade!
