  • Design Technology Week

    Fri 10 Feb 2023

During Design Technology week, each year group took a day out to put into practice their technical knowledge in designing, making and evaluating different structures.

Year R designed and made and evaluated their own tower. It was amazing how the finished towers resembled their plans so clearly.

Year 1 were tasked with making a bridge which was at least 40cm long and to hold 3 soft toys (linked to 3 Billy Goat's Gruff).

Year 2 had fun finding sticks in our outside area to make a strong shelter out of natural materials.

It was clear that both children and adults enjoyed and learnt a lot of skills from the day.

  • Healthier Together

    Fri 16 Dec 2022

Due to current pressures on the NHS, we have been asked to promote the 'Healthier Together' resource for parents to get advice and guidance about your child's health and well-being. The 'Healthier Together' platform has a number of accessibility functions: when touched the text will be read aloud; parents may select their country's flag and all pages translated into their language; and the font size can also be increased.

Visit what0-18.nhs.uk or download the free 'Healthier Together' app from the Apple Store or on Google Play.

  • Victorians

    Fri 11 Nov 2022

On Monday Year 2 launched their 'travelling back in time' topic. The children all looked amazing in their costumes. Thank you for your support at home which made the day such a success. Through role play and discussions the children learnt what it was like to be at school during the Victorian times.

  • Crash landing site

    Fri 11 Nov 2022

The children in Year 1 could not believe their eyes on Monday this week, when they went out to the back playground and discovered that there had been a crash landing. The scene was safely marked up as the children went looking for clues to find out what it could be. We found a star map for space travellers, empty packets of Milky Way, Galaxy and Mars bars! We looked carefully at the crash site and the children had lots of ideas, scenarios and questions. Back in class we discussed what we had seen and found, and this led into our Space Learning Journey, which we'll be looking at this half-term. We are so fortunate that our caretaker Mr Waren spotted the crash site and safely cordoned off the area, and that he was able to recycle the debris.

  • Walktober

    Fri 14 Oct 2022

Walktober celebrates international Walk to School Month, when communities are asked to walk and wheel as much as possible to and from school.

Last week, there was a fabulous effort to wheel and scoot to and from school. Next week (17-21 October 2022) we're focusing on walking, and specifically asking you to replace any car journey with a walk instead. We would love to receive photos of your extra walks. You can email these into school.

Parents, pupils can enter a 'Your Steps Count' competition, You can make a pledge and complete a Challenge card, which must be submitted into MyJourneyHampshire.com/walktober by Friday 11 November 2022. You don't need to record activity every day - just be as active as you can! If you're already very active, it would be great if you could encourage others to join you.

The aim is to have fun actively travelling, however stepping up will make a difference in many ways that will impact the environment, your well-being and the community.

  • Active Travel Week (Wheels)

    Fri 07 Oct 2022

    Active Travel Week - 3 to 7 October 2022

Well done parents and children! Wow, there was a fabulous turn-out of wheels this week.

On Wednesday at Active Travel Breakfast, all the children that scooted or cycled were invited to breakfast with Miss Holmes. Bike-It John was on hand to present badges.

Friday, was a 'Bling your Ride' competition. The children paraded their blinged bikes and scooters for the judges in the Year 1 playground. Mrs Strong got carried away with the bike horn! Despite the hooting, Miss Holmes and Bike-It John were busy concentrating on judging the bling. The winners will be presented with a prize at Crown Assembly.

We have been super impressed with the effort to get on your wheels this week. Next up is Walktober!

  • The Bike Doctor

    Wed 28 Sep 2022

As we get ready for Active Travel Week / Cycle to School Week (3-7 October), Bike It John was at school this morning to check over bikes and help with any questions. He conducted a number of repairs and we look forward to seeing him again next week when he joins us for 'Bling your Ride'.

During the week of 3-7 October we particularly want to encourage children to get on their wheels and scoot or cycle to school. Miss Holmes will be offering breakfast to children that actively scoot or cycle to school on Wednesday 5 October. This will run from 8.30am - 9am and details can be found in the 23.09.2022 newsletter.

On Friday 7 October, children are invited to decorate their bike or scooter and ride it to school. There will be prizes for the best blinged ride!

  • Year 2 Football Tournament

    Fri 23 Sep 2022

On Friday 23 September, some boys and girls from year 2 were invited to participate in an inter-school football tournament against Fryern Infant School. The event was held at Merdon Junior School. We had a boys and girls team each representing their classes Beech and Cedar.

The event was organised by ACE Sports & Education together with Miss Salentino. This is the first of several inter-school events planned for this year.

We hope to offer all year 2 children the opportunity to participate in one of the sporting events.

Although the day started a bit damp, the weather soon brightened up and it turned out to be a really lovely day. It was great to have some parents to support with walking the children to Merdon and cheering on the teams.

Overall, the winners were Fryern 'purple' girls and Chandler's Ford 'Beech' boys. The children showed great enthusiasm and sportsmanship and whether they were keen footballers or were playing for the first time, they all enjoyed the event.

  • Remembering Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

    Fri 16 Sep 2022

Following the sad news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 8 September 2022, the Year 1 and 2 children held an assembly on Monday this week, to talk about Queen Elizabeth II and to remember what a special monarch and lady she was. The children had remembered so much about her from the Platinum Jubilee celebrations last term.

Today, we are marking her passing in a positive way for the children. All children in school have planted a daffodil bulb in the school grounds. We look forward to a beautiful daffodil display in the Spring which will help us to enjoy, reflect and remember Queen Elizabeth II, and that there is a lot to be happy about.

The school is closed on Monday 19 September for the additional bank holiday on the day of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

We are encouraging parents and carers to take your child for a walk this weekend and to choose a pebble, which can be decorated at home and then brought into school on Tuesday 20 September. We will help the children to place the pebble in the borders near to where they planted their bulb. Don't worry if you are not able to do this, as the teachers will also place little 'class markers' as well.

  • Platinum Jubilee

    Sun 19 Jun 2022
